tre bicchieri gambero rosso

Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso, 5 Grappoli from Bibenda and a Gold Medal from The Wine Hunter

Varvaglione 1921 Wins a Triple Crown of Recognition

Idea, a Primitivo rosé wine presented at the last Vinitaly received the prestigious Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso. And the Cosimo Varvaglione Private Collection Primitivo di Manduria DOP garnered the coveted 5 Grappoli from Bibenda. Instead it was the Cosimo Varvaglione Private Collection Negroamaro that earned the Gold Medal from the Wine Hunter.

Two different interpretations of that prince of Puglia native grape varieties – Primitivo – two ways of making wine, two projects linked by a sustainable approach that respects nature. And two prizes that reward that approach. On October 27 there will be the official presentation of the Gambero Rosso in Rome, where Idea will be front and center. On November 30, in the elegant halls of Rome’s Cavalieri Hilton, Franco Maria Ricci will award the Cosimo Varvaglione Private Collection Primitivo di Manduria.

At the Merano Wine Festival, November 8 – 11, the Cosimo Varvaglione Private Collection Negroamaro, awarded the Gold Medal by the Wine Hunter. It will also be presented among the 100 Best Wines at that event. This special recognition is decided by a good eight commissions including sommeliers and journalists as well as experts from the field.

The Cosimo Varvaglione Private Collection that bears the signature of the winery’s owner is the fruit of a careful selection of grapes from old vines, with an average age of 70 years old. For these wines, the grapes are picked by hand during the night, and undergo a meticulous selection process. The entire enterprise is followed personally by Cosimo from the vineyard to the cellar, an exercise of love that he decided to dedicate to this particular area of land where his family started making wine at the beginning of the 1900s. Putting his name on these bottles is how Cosimo put a seal on that generational passage, with that same love for the land that his family dedicated to the same vines.

Thus, 2019 is turning out to be a year where Varvaglione 1921 is harvesting results from a long and painstaking effort that has seen the family involved, supported by a team of motivated collaborators.
